The road to get here:

As you probably know, Plein air Magazine hosts the annual Plein air Salon Competition. This 10th annual competition had approximately 7,000 entries between July, 2020 and March 2021.

• Each cycle, a different judge chooses category winners (such as best figure, best outdoor still life, best plein air, etc.) as well as first, second, and third place. There were 22 category winners each month, about 200 total.
• Safe Harbor was awarded first place overall in October by Karen Hewitt, owner of Hagan Fine Art in Charleston.
• Headin' Home was awarded first place overall in November by Cynthia McBride, owner of McBride Gallery in Annapolis.
• Next, twenty-five finalists, including both of these pieces, were chosen by a panel of judges using a point system.
• Finally, a panel of judges, also using a point system, selected three honorable mentions, third place, second place, and the grand prize winner.
• This was the first year for a People's Choice award.
• These were announced live on Facebook (usually it is at an in-person event).
